Mableton Drive-Over Catch Basin & Concrete Repair

Mableton, Georgia | Industrial Drainage & Concrete Reconstruction

Redesigning an obstructive drainage structure to restore truck access while preserving stormwater capture and correcting failed concrete pavement.

Original open concrete drainage basin and gutter restricting truck maneuvering space at a Mableton industrial facility.

The Project

An existing concrete drainage structure at this Mableton machine and tool-and-die facility effectively captured runoff, but its oversized open basin and gutter occupied valuable driveway space used by tractor trailers entering the property for loading. Trucks had driven into and across the open structure in the past, creating an operational and safety concern in an already constrained maneuvering area.

The customer asked J Wells Precision Grading to develop a solution that would preserve the established drainage function while making the area drive-over and recovering usable pavement for truck traffic. The work also included replacement of several failed concrete pavement sections elsewhere on the property, where demolition ultimately exposed inadequate subgrade preparation beneath the original slabs.

The Work

J Wells carefully demolished the original open basin, gutter and adjoining concrete while determining how the older structure had been integrated into the surrounding driveway. The new catch basin was constructed with a substantially smaller opening and configured for a customer-fabricated steel drive-over grate, allowing tractor trailers to use pavement that had previously been occupied by the open drainage structure. Concrete placement was completed in stages so forms could be removed and the basin, gutter and surrounding driveway could be properly tied together while maintaining the existing runoff path.

Elsewhere on the property, failed concrete sections were isolated, demolished and removed. Once the slabs were opened, high areas in the underlying subgrade revealed why portions of the original concrete had been thinner than intended and had failed while much of the surrounding decades-old pavement remained serviceable. J Wells corrected and graded the subgrade so the replacement could maintain a consistent approximately six-inch concrete thickness rather than reproducing the original condition.

The work was sequenced around the needs of the active industrial facility, maintaining truck access through the catch-basin reconstruction for as long as practical before the gates were temporarily closed for the larger pavement demolition, replacement and required cure period. Additional interior concrete repairs were also completed to improve usable shop-floor areas affected by earlier phases of the building’s long history.
